David Holden

Since entering the education field in 1990, David Holden has been a true change agent and a highly visible leader in several significant school reform efforts. He has spearheaded his school's efforts in implementing Smaller Learning Communities, Structured English Immersion, and Formative Assessment and now supports schools and districts across the country on their school redesign efforts. In 2005, David, his wife Mary, and their high school, received a California School Boards Association Golden Bell award in the category of Innovative High School Transition Courses for the transition course they designed. David is well versed in multiple disciplines and languages, and his background as an elementary and high school teacher serve him well when approaching secondary literacy issues. He is recognized by his peers as a skilled instructor, engaging teachers increases teacher effectiveness, which improves student learning. As an instructional coach, David works with teachers across all disciplines to refine pedagogy, implement sound instructional and assessment practices, and to develop instructional leadership.

David has worked frequently with the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) and WestEd on several instructional leadership institutes. In 2006, David co-founded the American Alliance for Innovative Schools, LLC. and currently works at the national level with districts in the area of middle/high school reform. He currently partners with schools and districts as an instructional coach and provides professional development and consultation work primarily in the areas of effective instructional strategies, scaffolding instruction for English Learners, formative assessment, standards-based grading, instructional coaching, and increasing teacher capacities through professional learning teams.
